India

Jesuit Mission Australia has been intimately involved in India since 1951. Starting with six Australian Jesuits, the mission of Hazaribag was gradually built up into two flourishing dioceses with their own local bishops. Now there is a fully-fledged Jesuit province, the Province of Hazaribag. The works of the Province include numerous high schools, primary schools, hospitals, social service centres, and a university college, and close to 50 parishes in total.

The Jesuits are assisted by a number of other congregations of sisters and priests. What is particularly inspiring is the fact that so many young people are drawn to join the Jesuits and to join the sister congregations. The present focus of the Jesuits in India is particularly directed towards accompanying the villagers in their struggles to find justice in deeply divided world.
