Life in India

Fr Tony Herbert SJ was a special guest at the 2009 Indian Bazaar, hosted by St Ignatius' College, Riverview. He took some time out to describe to students what it was like to go on mission to Hazaribag in 1965.
Some things, he said, he learned to change, such as the way he ate, slept and spoke. But principles and values remained unchanged, and there were things he learned he could not accept such as the caste system that told people they were not equal.
'In his address, Fr Herbert reminded the students that here at Riverview life is rather serene; yet there is a lot of violence in the outside world', said Riverview Principal Shane Hogan.
'It is important, he said, that students are taught how to examine the mindset of those who are responsible for violence, poverty and starvation so that they can challenge these people and this mindset later on when they leave school.'
Saturday 19 September is the annual Jesuit Mission Indian Bazaar. The bazaar is one of Jesuit Mission's hallmark events during which numerous schools and parishes join forces to raise money for vital work in the developing world. Each year more than $150,000 is raised for Jesuit Mission projects.
Stalls include St Aloysius College Cakes, the Northbridge Parish Barbecue, the Holy Family Parish Fruit Salad stall, Sevenhill's Wine Bar, the ever popular plant and book stalls, St Thomas Willoughby's Donuts, Star of the Sea Kirribilli's second-hand toys and the Indian Elephant stall.
The bazaar runs from 9am to 5pm, with mass celebrated at noon and again at 5.30pm. Riverview is situated on Tambourine Bay Road, Lane Cove.
